Citi Double Cash® Card vs. Chase Freedom Unlimited®
The earnings structure with the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is a bit more complex, but potentially more rewarding. The earns 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstores and 1.5% on all other purchases. It’s also a winner when it comes to an introductory APR on purchases. It offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.49% to 27.99% applies. An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days of account opening. After that, a fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer applies.
Neither card has an annual fee, but they differ, again, regarding travel benefits: The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers travel protections—trip cancellation and interruption insurance, travel and emergency assistance, and auto rental coverage. Both cards have a foreign transaction fee. Like the Citi Double Cash, the Freedom Unlimited also offers a welcome bonus: Earn $300 bonus cash back after spending $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
The minimum credit score recommendation is similar for both cards. With so many similarities, it may be best to consider what other cards you might pair with either of these. Rewards from the Freedom Unlimited can’t be transferred to travel partners without pairing it with a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, but points from the Double Cash can transfer to travel partners—though at a lower rate unless it’s paired with a premium Citi card.
If you plan to use either card from travel, comparing the transfer partners can bring more clarity. Several airline and hotel partners overlap and are available with both cards, while some, like World of Hyatt and Southwest are available for transfers from Chase and not Citi.
